AR as a medium for representation of architectural form Ole Bouman showed SARA the AR-app that the NAi is currently working on. It is a highly interesting and ambitious example of AR as a platform for architecture, or AR as a medium to showcase projects: with SARA, an urban augmented reality application, you can see and experience the built environment of the past, present and future, via Layar Browser. The NAI has set itself an incredible challenge: to make the Netherlands the first country in the world to have its entire architecture viewable on smartphones thanks to augmented reality.

What is interesting about SARA is that it not only functions as an annotated tour through Dutch cities, revealing bits of background knowledge concerning the architecture that is visible to the eye and the mobile phone camera. It can also project images of the past and the future on top of existing reality. Users can watch historic buildings that once were present at their current site, examine alternatives (in the case of competitions where different architect have sent in proposals), projects that were never realized, or future buildings.

Number 9 in the tour is a 3D animation made by Infofilm/Museummedia of a dramatic explosion. On august 3th 1807 (300 years ago at time of writing) a cargo ship carrying 18.000kg of gunpowder exploded in the city center of Leiden. More then 200 houses were leveled, 151 dead and more then 2000 wounded. By studying reports and paintings dating from that time alot of information was gathered about which houses and trees where destroyed. The city archives provided detailed drawings of the ‘before situation’,  those drawings were used as textures for the houses.

How can you increase the immersion of data? The bachelor thesis „Experiencing Abstract Information“ by Jochen Winker and Stefan Kuzaj introduces theoretical principles and shows them with some interactive examples.

There are four essential parts in making abstract information experiencable: information itself, relevant senses, fitting emotion and a direct reference of the presentation to the information. With our method you can not only design fitting media, but also check existing media for its potential.

To demonstrate the systematics, we built three interactive installations. By using them you become an interactive diagram in a virtual mirror, cause virtual water-pollution in a water-basin or compare the time you have to work in different countries to buy a big mac or some bread. All of these installations show a different approach of immersive data transfer.

Closed Captioning is the white text on a black background that appears on a television mainly for the use of the deaf and hard-of-hearing who account for about 10% of the US population. The “Closed” part of Closed Captioning means it can be turned on and off through your television or cable box. Captioning provides dialogue and audio cues not only for the deaf community, but is also used in gyms, bars and other places where a television's audio is turned off or inaudible.

In the United States the FCC requires closed captioning for 100% of English television programming, and as of January 2010, 100% of Spanish programming as well. This includes live television, but this article will be focusing on post-production closed captioning. Exceptions to these laws exist, but they are few, and official paperwork is required to be exempt.

Current law only requires television broadcasts to be closed captioned, even though standards exist for other formats. Although, most entities that receive federal funding government agencies, many universities, etc. are required to caption any video they distribute.

The iPad is a generational shift from the laptop computer to the handheld computer and will directly impact online continuing education courses. Mostly, the use of a laptop requires the user to be in an upright seated position whereas the iPad sports enhanced mobility similar to that of smart phones. The iPad allows users to shift from semi-mobile laptop computing to highly mobile handheld device computing thus opening up new possibilities to easily study continuing education courses on subways, at bus stops, at a park, in vehicle passenger seats, while waiting in a line, etc….

The iPad will increase mobile online continuing education usage far greater than other eReaders such as the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader Touch. The Kindle text readout is a form of eInk that is visible in daylight without backlighting and has extremely long battery life. The iPad features only up to 10 hours of battery time and does not have the eInk advantages in daylight. However, sharper text resolution and improved ergonomics are major reasons for the inevitable success of the iPad in the eReader market.

• The average Twitter user has 27 followers, down from 42 followers in August 2009.
• Twitter is losing 20% from its July peak: The monthly rate of new user accounts is currently around 6.2 million new accounts per month or 2-3 per second.
• A large percentage of Twitter accounts are inactive, with about 25% of accounts having no followers and about 40% of accounts having never sent a single Tweet. Only about 17% of registered Twitter accounts sent a Tweet in December 2009, an all-time-low.
• About 80% of all Twitter users have tweeted fewer than ten times.
• In line with Nielsen’s April 09 observations ”Twitter users fail to return the following month“ – only 20% of tweeters come back to tweet in their second month.

M-Learning of “Mobile Learning” is leren terwijl je niet op een vooraf afgesproken plaats en tijdstip aanwezig bent voor een geplande leeractiviteit. Anders gezegd, als je kunt leren door een mobiel apparaat zoals een i-phone te gebruiken terwijl je bijvoorbeeld op straat loopt of aan het werk bent, dan heb je het over M-learning.

Analisten van Gartner voorspellen dat smartphones zoals de i-phone in 2013 de laptop en de pc zullen overtreffen als meest gebruikt apparaat om te browsen op internet. In december 2009 was het browsergebruik via smartphones nog geen 2%. De ver van m’n bed show dus, lijkt het. Hoe komt Gartner dan toch tot die conclusie? Welnu, ze kijken simpelweg naar het moment waarop er meer smart-phones met internetbrowser verkocht worden dan laptops en pc’s. En dat is dus in 2013. Maar er zijn meerdere redenen waarom M-learning dichterbij is dan we denken.

Tomi Ahonen schreef al in 2008 in z’n boek, “Mobile as 7th of the Mass Media” dat er 7 redenen zijn waarom M-learning snel een serieuze optie kan worden.

In The Revolution Will Be Animated, documentary filmmaker Marine Lormant Sebag presents multiple viewpoints on copyright in the digital age. The film’s main character is Nina Paley, an American animator who produced a feature film called Sita Sings the Blues. Nina encountered many copyright issues with the songs she used, from 1920s´ singer Annette Hanshaw. These experiences made her realize that she didn’t want the same thing to happen to her film. She finally used a Creative Commons Share Alike license in order to free her work and present it to the world.
